William Anderson was born in Scotland and trained to be a shipbuilder before turning to painting. This is reflected in his work, as the draughtsmanship is correct and accurate. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1787 and 1834. Much of his work is represented by British institutions, such as the Victoria and Albert museum and The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
