"Riviera Coast Scene" is an oil painting by Sir Winston Churchill, circa 1935. The art size is 25 1/8 x 30 1/8 inches. The framed size is 32 7/8 x 37 7/8 x 4 1/4 inches. Painted from an unusually high vantage, “Riviera Coast Scene” vividly conveys the formidable distance and breadth of the scene from the perch where he set his easel. Interestingly, Paul Rafferty did not include this painting in his book Winston Churchill: Painting on the French Riviera, believing it could likely be a scene from the Italian Lake District, where Churchill also painted in the same time period. Coast Scene Near Lympne By Sir Winston Churchill

Located in New Orleans, LA
Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965 | British Coast Scene near Lympne Oil on canvas Immediately recognizable as one of the most important statesmen in world history, Sir Winston Churchill also pursued the art of painting for more than 40 years. A particularly fine piece from the statesman’s oeuvre, this masterpiece entitled Coast Scene near Lympne is rendered in fluid brushstrokes and a vivid array of hues. Churchill often leveraged his elite connections to navigate the complex political landscape of the 1920s and 1930s. Many of these invaluable social interactions occurred at the setting of this magnificent landscape painting: the distinguished Port Lympne estate. Owned by Sir Philip Sassoon...

Edwardian Beach Scene, British 20th century oil on canvas
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Richly-colored and vibrant Edwardian Beach Scene, British oil painting on canvas in impressionist style, presented in contemporary gold frame. The oil paint is raised and textured, lifting the beach sands, sea, sky and dresses from the canvas. Gathering in Edwardian period costuming looks out over the sands to the sea and clouds, with distant sailboats and children playing in the waves. This is a delightful contemporary painting, unsigned, but original oil dating to the 20th century. Framers tags verso from Oxford and Glasgow. In very good condition, with a few minor chips on the gold frame, but otherwise the painting is bright and beautiful. Provenance to gallery in the United Kingdom, imported by Saltire Gallerie...

Elizabeth Taylor 1970s Handwritten Love Letter to Richard Burton
Located in Jersey, GB
The unique Elizabeth Taylor Richard Burton love letter: A love letter written, in pencil, by Elizabeth Taylor to her husband Richard Burton on their ten year wedding anniversary, March 15th 1974, just days before their breakup. Taylor and Burton were renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie "The Klansman". Their lease on the home began on February 15th 1974. The letter reads in full: "My darling (my still) my husband. I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you - (with you) - my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times. Most of all my love for you, and whatever loves you can dole out to me - I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only "boil and bubble" inside and hope you understand how I really feel. Anyway I lust thee, your (still) wife. P.S. O'Love, let us never take each other for granted again! P.P.S. How about that- ten years!!" Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity. However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure. After that, Taylor made sure she was on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne of the thousand days. A further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years. An affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumors of an affair with Raquel Welch. Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with "a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women." The love letter is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them: "This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th till April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the master bedroom bed...

Still Life, Silver at Chartwell
By Winston Churchill
Located in New Orleans, LA
Believed by many to be the greatest Briton of all time, Winston Churchill was a revered statesman and a highly talented painter. This lovely work of art by the great man, Still Life, Silver at Chartwell, clearly displays his impressive skill as an artist. The artwork is one of a series of oil paintings executed by Churchill while staying at his country home. Churchill portrays a thoughtfully arranged collection of silver, including a salver and two neoclassical sugar pots, alongside a case of cigarettes. Through Churchill’s attentive brushwork the soft grays become gleaming silver on the muted tablecloth, providing a glimpse into the artist’s everyday private life at Chartwell. Sir William Nicholson, a fellow artist and dear friend of Churchill’s, often stayed at Chartwell during the 1930s and was deeply influential to Churchill’s artistic practice. The two would paint together around the estate, and one can easily see the similarities in Nicholson’s still life paintings with the present work, including an artwork presently in the Tate collection. As opposed to Churchill’s vibrant landscape paintings, the artist imbues the work with a sense of peaceful tranquility through a poignant use of light and shadow reflective of his own life at the time of its painting. It was composed during the 1930s, a time when Churchill was relatively free from political pressures and responsibilities, and the artwork represents a still moment of quiet contemplation as the artist honed his practice to remarkable effect. Painting was a dominating passion for Churchill in the last half of his life. There is little evidence that he had any artistic training prior to his 40s. In fact, his wife Clementine mentioned at one point that before he began painting, Churchill had hardly visited an art museum, much less created art. Churchill first began painting following a personal and political disaster, the Dardanelles campaign, in 1915. He is quoted as telling the painter Sir John Rothenstein: “If it weren’t for painting, I couldn’t live; I couldn’t bear the strain of things.” In 1948, he was bestowed the prestigious recognition of Honorary Academician Extraordinary by the Royal Academy of Arts. He painted roughly 500 works, approximately 350 of which are housed in Churchill’s garden studio at Chartwell. The present work also bears a significant provenance. Churchill gifted Still Life, Silver at Chartwell to his dear friend and colleague Sir Anthony Eden...
